A triumphal visit to Prague

The highlight of the Prague Symphony Orchestra concert on February 19th in Smetana Hall of Prague's Municipal House was the Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein; the second feature was the Violin Concerto by Khachaturian. Bernstein's calming interpretation of the Hebrew psalms is written for children’s voices and orchestra and the Czech Boys Choir Boni Pueri, prepared by conductors Pavel Horak and Jakub Martinec was fantastic. The difficult parts were sung lightly with excellent homogeneity and fullness of voice. (It was a better performance than the Wiener Jeunesse-Chor on the Bernstein’s recording for Deutsche Grammophon.) Conductor John Axelrod prepared both the choir and orchestra very well, and inspired everyone in a flowing, rhythmically concise performance. For the boys from Hradec Kralove, it was a triumphal visit to Prague.
